Capital gains calculator

The sale of any asset involves a capital gain or loss, with the former inviting capital gains tax.

An asset acquired 5 or 10 years back at a value of say Rs 1,000 will not cost the same. There is inflation to be factored in to find out whether one has made a capital gain on the asset. For this purpose the government comes out with a cost inflation index every year, based on which the index cost of acquisition is worked out from which the capital gain/loss is computed.

Sounds complicated? To make things simpler, rediff.com has worked out a capital gains tax calculator that takes into consideration all the relevant factors and tells you the tax you may have to pay on selling your asset.
