Daag (1952)

If Devdas immortalised Dilip Kumar as a tragic youth driven to alcoholism by unrequited love, Daag presented him as a disenchanted young man who hides himself behind a liquid haze.

Shankar (Dilip Kumar), a talented, headstrong and impoverished toymaker sits at the village liquor shop and watches life pass by. Neither his girlfriend's (Nimmi) tearful pleas, nor his mother's (Lalita Pawar) fervent prayers prevent Shankar from destroying himself.

Dilip Kumar's candid performance gave an evocative expression to Shankar's restlessness, effectively summed
up in the lament, Aye mere dil kahin aur chal. Daag fetched Dilip Kumar his first Best Actor Filmfare Award.
