Director Ketan Mehta [right] said he has wanted to make The Rising for the last ten years: "It is not a patriotic film, but a human story. I really believe in it. We have seen our history from the British perspective. Now let us see it from the Indian perspective through this film."

Twenty-five per cent of the cast is British. Ketan claims this is the biggest Indian project yet.

He explained, "There are four or five places in India where people claim Mangal was born. He is more of folklore for Indians. The only fact known is about his death, when he was hanged at Barrackpore Cantonment near Kolkata. I have always felt he would be an exciting cinematic figure."
