Probe ordered into attempt on minister's life

The Uttar Pradesh government has deputed Additional Director General of Police A K Saran to inquire into the alleged attempt on the life of Minister of State for Relief and Rehabilitation Ashok Yadav by Samajwadi Party workers during his visit to Ferozabad and Mainpuri districts yesterday.

According to an official spokesman, Saran will make an on-the-spot inquiry into the incident and submit his report to the government in three days.

Meanwhile, Mainpuri Senior Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar and Ferozabad SP Shripat Shirodkar have been transferred. Both the officers have been attached with the office of the director general of police.

Reacting to the allegation, state Samajwadi Party president Ram Saran Das and principal general secretary Shiv Pal Singh Yadav told the media that the allegation of the minister was 'totally false and fabricated''. Earlier, the two leaders handed over a memorandum to Governor Mohammad Shafi Quereshi demanding an inquiry.

The leaders said the minister had gone to Jasrana and the the landing of his helicopter at a college there annoyed the students who were appearing for an exam as their answer-sheets were blown away due to the high velocity wind caused by the leanding.

Adding to the confusion was the presence of several farmers who refused to accept the compensation offered by the minister. The farmers complained that the sum offered by the minister was inadequate as they had lost heavily in a hailstorm.

Das and Yadav said the minister was not at all attacked.

Naming two SP legislators in the fabricated incident was part of a political conspiracy, the Samajwadi Party leader said.
