MIM MLA's arrest sparks violence in Hyderabad

Violence broke out at several places in Hyderabad's old city yesterday, following the arrest of Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen MLA Asaduddin Owaisi and former MLA Syed Sajjad for attacking a police station in protest against the burning of a person allegedly by some policemen.

Owaisi and 50 of his followers ransacked the Shamsheer Gunj police station in Hyderabad causing damage to property. Two police constables were injured in stone-throwing by the agitators.

The attack followed reports that one Mohammad Fareed was admitted to the Osmania hospital after he was set on fire, allegedly by three policemen.

The victim, who was later shifted to a private hospital, said in his dying declaration before a magistrate that the policemen, who were on the lookout for a criminal named Rasheed Khan, had set him on fire after finding him near the latter's house.

The MIM workers protested in front of the police station. Miscreants also stoned five buses, the police added.

The constables, allegedly involved in the burning incident, are absconding. They have been placed under suspension.

Normalcy was restored in the city today.
