Police atrocities rock assembly, 27 MLAs suspended

Twenty-seven members belonging to the Congress, the All India Majlis Ithehadul Muslimeen and the Majlis Bachao Teherek were suspended from the Andhra Pradesh Assembly for a day today for stalling the proceedings. Members of the Left parties and the Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao-Telugu Desam Party staged a walkout over the recent police atrocities in the state.

On a motion moved by Legislative Affairs Minister P Ashok Gajapati Raju, 24 Congress members, two Majlis and an MBT member were suspended and the marshals summoned to escort the members out of the house.

Earlier, as soon as the house met for the day, the Congress and the Majlis members and MBT leader Amanullah Khan were on their feet, demanding that the issue be taken up for discussion again today as they could not seek clarifications yesterday after Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu replied to a six-hour debate on it.

However, Speaker Y Ramakrishnudu said there was no need to discuss the issue again as it had already been debated thoroughly yesterday. But the Congress and the Majlis members persisted with their demand, leading to their suspension.
