Supreme Court dismisses Maharashtra petition on rent control act

The Supreme Court yesterday dismissed a review petition filed by the Maharashtra government on the rent control issue because the state government had enacted a new rent control act before the expiry of deadline set by the apex court.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice M M Punchhi, Justices B N Kripal and Srinivasan dismissed the petition when informed that the state government had enacted a new rent control act before the expiry of deadline set by it. Maharashtra Minister of State for Housing Raj Purohit attended the hearing.

Later, Purohit told the media that the new act was enacted to meet the state government's commitment to tenants.

Purohit said he met Union Urban Development Minister Ram Jethmalani and submitted to him a letter requesting to withdraw the model rent control legislation as it was not in the interest of poor and middle class people. He also urged him to constitute a committee to go into the details of the rent control legislation.
