No central team for AP: Dattatreya

Union Minister of State for Urban Development and Bharatiya Janata Party's Andhra Pradesh unit president Bandaru Dattatreya today opposed the Congress leaders's demand for deputing a central team to the state to assess the law and order situation.

Addressing the media in Vijayawada, he said, "I do not think the situation warrants (for sending a central team). The Tamil Nadu law and order situation is different. Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence activities had increased and people in Coimbatore and other towns were terrorised. The central team was sent there so that the Union government could have a first-hand knowledge of the situation."

He, however, admitted that 'police atrocities' in Andhra Pradesh had increased in the last one week and described the incidents in Karimnagar district, where several policemen went on the rampage protesting against the transfer of police superintendent, as 'shameful' and 'serious'.

He agreed that the incidents reflected the failure of the state government but declined to demand the resignation of either Home Minister A Madhav Reddy or Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, saying, "It is not good to demand the resignation for everything."
