RBI team to study cotton farmers's problems

The Reserve Bank of India is deputing a high-level team to Andhra Pradesh to look into the immediate credit requirements of farmers affected by the largescale outbreak of pests in the state.

The team headed by its deputy governor, along with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development chairman, would evolve a package of assistance for farmers of commercial crops like cotton and tobacco, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's office said yesterday.

The deputation of the team follows a recent letter written by Naidu to Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral.

More than 70 farmers, mostly cotton growers, have committed suicide so far in the state.

A 33-year-old cotton farmer attempted to commit suicide by consuming pesticide even as Naidu was addressing a campaign meeting at Markapur in Prakasam on Tuesday.
