From the first electionsin 1957, the constituency voted for Nanubhai Patel of the Congress, and stayed with him in 1977 when he fought on a BLD ticket. It reverted to the Congress since then, breaking tradition once in 1989 to vote the Janata Dal. In 1996, however, it was the BJP's M R Chaudhari who was elected MP, defeating his Congress rival by a slender 370 votes.
