2 killed, 4 injured in commmunity clash

Two people were killed and four others injured on Monday morning in a clash between two communities of Barevli and Devbandi in south Bombay's Jama Masjid area.

The incident had started with members of the Barevli community distributing pamphlets at the Jama Masjid, which angered the members of the Devbandi community. A clash between the two followed, and stones, lathis and knives were used on the two victims, both belonging to the Devbandi community.

The victims have been identified as Sraj Gharchi and his elder brother Rafiq.

The police have detained 24 persons for interrogation and have registered cases of rioting. Tight police bandobast is being maintained in the area.

Meanwhile, Metropolitan Magistrate Vilas Dixit remanded Munawar Yusuf Heera to police custody till January 27 for distributing leaflets inciting religious sentiments in connection with the incident.
