State facing power deficit of 1,000 MW, says Munde

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde today admitted that the state is facing a deficit of 800 to 1,000 MW in the demand and supply of electricity.

Munde, who also holds the energy portfolio, told the legislative council during Question Hour that during March, April and May, the shortage of electricity was severe due to the low supply of gas and lack of power generation in Uran power station.

He informed members that from June, the situation has been improving. The 500 MW Chandrapur power project has already started working, while the first phase of the 715 MW Enron project will be commissioned by October.

In reply to a supplementary by Arun Mehta (Independent), he said in 1995 the installed capacity of electricity was 11,500 MW and by 2002, the states power generation capacity would be 20,000 MW. The demand for electricity in industrial, household and agricultural areas increases by ten per cent every year.

Munde assured the House that there would be an increase of 4,000 MW electricity next year and the problems of load-shedding will not be there.
