Congress leads moves for adjournment motion over Ram temple

The Congress and other Opposition parties are likely to table an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha tomorrow on reports about the ongoing preparations for the construction of the Ram temple at the disputed site at Ayodhya, apparently dissatisfied with Prime Minister A B Vajpayee's assurance on the issue.

Briefing newspersons, Congress spokesperson Ajit Jogi said representatives of his party, the Left parties, Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Janata Party met in New Delhi today and decided to have floor coordination on the issue.

Earlier in the day, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said she was not satisfied with the prime minister's reply regarding the ongoing construction activities by the Sangh Parivar. She was, however, satisfied with Vajpayee's contention that the government would not allow construction of the temple at the disputed site till the Supreme Court decides on the issue.

Jogi said the Congress was in possession of clear-cut evidence that preparations are on in full swing for the construction of the temple at the disputed site at Ayodhya.

"We regard this as a very serious threat to the democratic and secular fabric of the nation and the party would go to any extent to preserve it," Jogi said in reply to a question.

Admitting that the Congress has failed to protect the Babri Masjid in 1992, Jogi said, "We feel sorry for that. The party would no longer go merely by the assurances given by the BJP leaders on this issue."
