Joshi asks Jethmalani to reconsider model rent act

Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar Joshi has asked Union Minister for Urban Development Ram Jethmalani to have a relook at the Model Rent Control Act ''in the larger interests'' of the hundreds of thousands of tenants in Bombay.

During a meeting with Jethmalani in Bombay on Monday night, Joshi explained how fixing of standard rent as per the Model Rent Control Act would be ''unfair as it will entail unaffordable levels of rent.''

Joshi said his government was committed to the welfare of the tenants and gave an assurance that steps were being taken for redressal of their grievances.

He also mentioned the ''compelling reasons'' behind the escalation of rent as per the Model Rent Control Act which could not be regarded as a fair and just solution to the problem of acute scarcity of accommodation in the city.

''These escalations will only increase the burden n protected tenants and occupants. Besides, the rent itself will increase many times,'' he said.
