Sonia given names of suspect legislators

Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra legislative assembly, Madhukarrao Pichad, today said he had submitted the names of seven to eight MLAs suspected to have cross-voted in the recent biennial elections, during his meeting with party president Sonia Gandhi in Delhi.

Pichad, who returned to Bombay last night, said he had requested her to take action against them if proved guilty during the inquiry.

He also told Sonia that the defeat of Ram Pradhan, the party's official candidate, was not deliberate. For the first time, money power was used during elections in the state and the MLAs had succumbed to this phenomenon which was never heard of in the party's state unit.

He said he urged the party president not to entertain people who have been whipping up anti-Pawar campaign, as there was an attempt to create a rift between herself and Pawar. He said Sonia's reponse was ''positive''.
