BJP, NTR-TDP part ways

The Bharatiya Janata Party today said its alliance with the Telugu Desam Party-NTR in Andhra Pradesh was 'a closed chapter'.

Party general secretary M Venkaiah Naidu said, ''The BJP-NTR-TDP alliance is over. If she (Lakshmi Parvathi) is not interested in having an understanding, the BJP is also not interested.''

Reacting to Lakshmi Parvathi's statement that her party would fight the 1999 assembly election in the state on its own, Naidu said the BJP had no objection if NTR's widow wanted to part ways.

When the BJP leader's attention was drawn to Laksmi Parvathi's statement that the BJP had no morality, Naidu said the party did not require any certificate from her.

He clarified that the BJP had not yet taken any initiative to seek Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party's support. He said the BJP had not formally contacted Naidu for support, but conceded that some BJP well-wishers were trying to muster support for the saffron combine.
