PDM not to align with any party in Meghalaya assembly

The People's Democratic Movement, which could determine the fate of the Meghalaya assembly speaker and the government, said it wanted separate seating arrangements in the House on Tuesday.

Addressing a joint press conference, PDM president S S Cajee, leader of the parliamentary party G Sangma and general secretary P Malngiang said they were yet to decide who to support in tomorrow's trial of strength in the floor of the House.

They denied press reports suggesting differences within the group, and said all three of them were united and that any decision would be taken collectively.

The United Parliamentary Forum led by the United Democratic Party claimed a strength of 31 in the assembly while the ruling Congress-led United Meghalaya Parliamentary Forum has 26 MLAs. Both claimed a majority.

The PDM, which bagged three seats, had initially extended its support to the UPF, but later withdrew support, saying the party would not align with any group at this juncture.
