3 killed, 31 injured in IIS building collapse

Three people were killed and at least 31 injured when the centre of a building at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, caved in Monday afternoon.

Five people, who were working on top of the building, are feared to be trapped under the debris.

Three bodies have been removed so far.

Police identified the deceased as assistant engineer Joshi (35) and assistant executive engineer Rame Gowda (50) from the Public Works Department. The third person was a videographer, Karunan (30).

The bodies have been sent to the nearby Ramaiah hospital for postmortem.

Police said the mishap occurred when the three were on the top of the structure. The engineers were overseeing a new method of concreting, while the videographer was recording it.

The injured have been admitted in the Ramaiah and other hospitals in the city.

Rescue operations by the police, fire service, military engineering personnel and home guards are on. A heavy duty crane from the MEG centre has been pressed into service to clear the debris.
