'Krishna water for Hyderabad' project to begin soon

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu yesterday announced in the state assembly that the work on the Rs 20 billion World Bank-aided project to bring Krishna water to Hyderabad would commence soon.

Intervening during the resumed discussion on the state budget, he said Rs 53 billion would be spent on irrigation projects in the state during the next two years.

He was responding to the members's plea that efforts should be made to complete the Krishna river irrigation projects before 2000 so that the state could utilise the surplus waters of the river as per the Bachawat Tribunal award.

He said an additional Rs 210 million would be spent for the development of backward areas in the state. Talks were on with the National Thermal Power Corporation for the location of a 500 MW power project in Shankerpalli, near Hyderabad.
