Probe into alleged police action against UP students
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Tuesday promised
the Lok Sabha to inquire into the alleged police action against
students appearing for board exams in Uttar Pradesh.
Responding during zero hour to Samajwadi Party leaders Mulayam
Singh Yadav and Mohan Singh, Vajpayee said he did not want to
dismiss the allegations as a ''state law and order issue'' in which the Centre
had no role.
Mulayam Singh had complained that attacks against students, women and Dalits were on the rise in the
state, and several
innocent persons were being held in jails. He alleged a Dalit settlement near Kanpur
had been demolished by the
state authorities.
Vajpayee said the authorities had informed him that no
student appearing for the annual examinations was
arrested or detained. But he assured members that
he would seek a probe into the members's allegations that students were
taken into custody.
The prime minister appealed to the Opposition not to defend in any
way the malaise of fraud and mass copying in examinations.
Pradip Kumar Kashyap had complained that a state
minister's landing his helicopter in a school compound during an examination had badly disturbed the students.
Earlier, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Madan Lal Khurana and
some other ruling party members had objected to the SP members raising
state subjects.
