158 persons hospitalised, doctors fear dengue outbreak

As many as 158 persons from Vashee village have been admitted to different hospitals in Kolhapur, after surgeons suspected an outbreak of dengue on the outskirts of the city.

According to reports, there is a considerable feeling of alarm in the town, as the number of cases reported in the Chhatrapati Urmila Raje civil hospital and the local hospitals has been rising constantly.

District Health Officer Dr Dileep Patil, who visited the village, said a temporary medical unit including four doctors with adequate medicines and staff are camping in the village to effectively check the outbreak. Dr Patil claimed that the situation was under control.

The condition of the sarpanch of Vashee village and the crusader against liquor in the village, Pavati Mali, is stated to be serious.

Meanwhile, blood samples of the affected people have been sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune, and after the reports are available, the cause of fever will be ascertained, he said.

A particular type of mosquito found in parts of the village spreads dengue, according to experts and some doctors.

District civil surgeon Dr K N Valunjkar and deputy director, health, Dr Bansode, have issued necessary guidelines to the people to prevent the disease from spreading further.
