Munde wants a TADA-like law to maintain law and order in Bombay

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde today expressed the need to enact a strict law such as the repealed Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act to maintain law and order in the face of fierce gang warfare in Bombay.

Speaking to the media in New Delhi, Munde, who also holds the home portfolio, reiterated that there was nothing wrong in underworld criminals being killed in police encounters, in self-defence.

The morale of the Bombay police is high after he personally paid visits to various police stations in the city and tried to resolve their practical difficulties, he said.

''I gave the police the 'green signal' to nab criminals and to go ahead with encounters if necessary, to build public confidence in the law-enforcing agency,'' he disclosed.

Pressing the police work during past one-week in the city and adjoining industrial Thane city, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that the police recovered as many as 60 AK-56 assault rifles, 47 hand grenades and 200 live cartridges besides 50 revolvers from the criminals in as many as 16 police encounters.

The sleuths have put behind the bars as many as 200 hardened criminals, he informed.
