E-Mail this report to a friend

Goa Chief Minister Dr Wilfred de Souza today said the Central Bureau of Investigation will resume its operation in Goa after a break of almost two years.

Welcoming the move, the chief minister said the CBI had a role to play in Goa following increasing incidents of official corruption and other malpractices.

He said he had urged the Union home ministry to resume operations in Goa and the central government had now confirmed the new development.

The chief minister, who is leaving for Delhi today on a three-day visit, will meet Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha, Defence Minister George Fernandes and Home Minister L K Advani.

He said he would vigorously pursue the matter of special grants of Rs 1.5 billion to Goa from the Centre with the finance minister, as directed by the prime minister during their last meeting.

Dr de Souza said the central ministry of tourism has released an amount of Rs 5 million to provide better amenities at Old Goa city, a heritage centre known for Roman Catholic shrines.

He also said he had asked Planning Minister Dayanand Narvekar, who wrote a letter to the prime minister without his (the CM's) authority, to explain the matter to him.
