Nashik flood recedes

Life is limping back to normal in north Maharashtra, particularly Nashik district, after flash floods claimed 18 lives over the past week.

Normal activity in the district was disrupted by continuous rain for the last two days. A six-year-old boy, Nilesh, died when the wall of his house collapsed at Aarai village in Satara district. In another incident, a youth was washed away in the Godavari river in Nashik city.

According to official sources, 90,000 cusecs of water were released from the Gangapur, Darna and Mukne dams. As a result, villages in the area were flooded. Bridges like Ramsetu on the Godavari and Chandori were submerged. Forty families of Saikheda village were shifted to safer locations.

The damage to standing crops and vegetables in the district was estimated at Rs 350 million. Traffic on the Bombay-Agra highway was disrupted yesterday by the rains. Rail services were also affected.
