Nineteen people were killed and 31 injured, four of them seriously, when a bus carrying pilgrims fell into a ravine at Pakhi near Garurganga in Chamoli district of Uttar Pradesh last evening.

The bus was going from Lambagar to Rishikesh when it skidded down the road while negotiating a turn, district magistrate Drumakant Panwar said over telephone today.

The bus was carrying about 50 passengers, mostly pilgrims from Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, besides some local passengers.

The injured have been admitted to the district hospital in Gopeshwar. Fourteen passengers died on the spot while five died when they were being taken to the hospital, Panwar said.

An ex-gratia of Rs 20,000 each will be paid to the next of the kin of the deceased and Rs 5,000 each for those injured, he said. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
