Underworld don Arun Gawli arrested

Underworld don-turned-politician and president of the Akhil Bharatiya Sena, Arun Gawli, was arrested by the Pune rural police last night from his residence at Wadgaon-Peer in Khed tehsil about 80 km from Pune, on suspicion of smuggling weapons.

Over 170 supporters of Gawli were also arrested when they tried to prevent the police from arresting Gawli by pelting stones.

Superintendent of Police (rural), Pune, Gulabrao Pol said the Pune rural police received information yesterday evening that two vehicles laden with weapons were heading towards Gawli's residence. Soon, a police party from the nearby Manchar police station was rushed to the village.

When the police demanded that they be allowed to enter Gawli's house to undertake a search, stiff resistance was put up by his supporters who pelted stones on the police party injuring three constables.

Police then resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the mob. The search, however, did not yield anything.

Gawli was arrested early this morning.
