Four Kargil heroes awarded Param Vir ChakraFour Indian Army personnel -- Captain Vikram Batra, Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav (all posthumous) and Rifleman Sanjay Kumar -- have been awarded the country's highest military honour, the Param Vir Chakra, for displaying exceptional valour during the Kargil crisis. Nine Maha Vir Chakras, four Uttam Yudh Seva Medals, 53 Vir Chakras, two Yudh Seva Medals and 84 Sena Medals, including one bar, have also been awarded to the heroes of Operation Vijay, an official spokesman in New Delhi said today.

In addition to the gallantry awards for Operation Vijay, 182 other gallantry awards have been announced. These include six Kirti Chakras, two Vir Chakras, 26 Shaurya Chakras, 143 Sena Medals (including one bar), three Nao Sena Medals and two Vayu Sena Medals. The recipients of the Kirti Chakra are:
