Stay on Kohram in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh High Court today restrained screening or televising of the Hindi movie Kohram in the state pending further orders.

A division bench, comprising Chief Justice D Raju and Justice L S Panta, handed down the interim order on a petition filed by former chief minister Virbhadra Singh.

The bench issued notices to the respondents to show cause why the writ petition be not admitted.

In his petition, the former chief minister complained that in the movie he, his actions, his character and public life had been adversely commented upon by stating allegations, which were false, scandalous and defamatory.

The petitioner said the allegations were against the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of India, security of state, public order, decency and morality.

The petitioner said the movie had been penned, produced and directed by Mehul Kumar who had acted in a most irresponsible manner in naming the villain after the petitioner and deliberately created the character of Virbhadra Singh alias Raja Saheb, in order to play mischief and defame the petitioner.

Virbhadra Singh said it was highly unlikely that the respondent was unaware of the fact that the petitioner was a former chief minister of Himachal Pradesh and a minister at the Centre and is ''affectionally known as Raja Sahib.''
