Walkout in Maharashtra Assembly
over university registrar's death
The entire Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly today staged a walkout in protest against what they called ''government's attempt to conceal facts'' about the death of the registrar of Nagpur University.
Nagpur University's registrar of Examination Department Jayram Shende, a prime accused in the marks scandal that rocked the university earlier this year, was found dead in his house on July 19.
The issue was raised today by Ravindra Mane of the Shiv Sena during the question hour. Minister of State for Home Manikrao Thackre said a case of "sudden death" was registered at the Ambazari police station on July 19 in connection with Jayram Shende's death.
However, Mane said the minister was not giving specific answers. At this point Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who also holds the home portfolio, informed the house that a police inquiry had revealed that Shende had committed suicide.
Leader of Opposition Narayan Rane said the government was making contradictory statements and was misguiding the House. He suggested that the question be withheld till more information was available.
Speaker Arun Gujrathi intervened at this juncture and said the information given by the home minister was from the police report and therefore no further details could be made available at this point of time.
The opposition members then rose to their feet and started shouting slogans condemning the government for misguiding the House. As no assurance of more information was forthcoming from the home minister, they staged a walkout.
