Chinese defence minister hails meetingChinese Defence Minister Gen Chi Haotian has hailed the week-end summit meeting between Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pakistani Premier Nawaz Sharif as significant for peace and stability in south Asia. Gen Haotian, who is heading a 16-member high-power delegation, arrived in Islamabad late last night on a five-day official visit. Talking to reporters at the airport, Gen Haotian said, "I am very glad to note that the leaders of Pakistan and India are meeting. I think that is very significant for the peace and stability in the whole of Asia." He said he was in Pakistan to enhance understanding between China and Pakistan and strenghten co-operation for the 21st century. The co-operation in defence is an important component of Sino-Pak relations. During his five-day stay in Pakistan, the Chinese defence minister will hold talks with Pakistani officials for future course of co-operation in defence. The two sides are also expected to sign three agreements, including one for sale of 50 F-7 Chinese fighter aircraft to Pakistan. |
