US President Bill Clinton today called Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on telephone and expressed understanding of India's position with regard to the need for the withdrawal of all intruders from Kargil, and for specific steps by Pakistan to reaffirm the sanctity of the Line of Control including cessation of cross-border terrorism.

During the 20-minute conversation this evening, Vajpayee informed the US president about the situation in Kargil, an official spokesman said.

Clinton expressed his desire to visit India in the near future and the prime minister assured him that a warm welcome awaited him.

The telephonic talk also touched on bilateral issues. Vajpayee reaffirmed his desire for deepening cooperation between the two countries. The US president endorsed the prime minister's view.
