At least eight people, including six policemen, were killed in an ambush at Vaitin, a village bordering Manipur, early this morning.

Manipur-based terrorist outfit, the People's Liberation Army is suspected to be behind the incident.

According to reports reaching Aizawl, six policemen -- two from the local police and four from the Mizoram Armed Police -- and two village police informers were killed in an ambush around 0300 hours.

Reports from Sakardai, the nearest township from the ambush site, said two villagers had gone to a police patrol stationed outside Vaitin to inform them about the suspected movement of terrorists in the village. The villagers have been identified as Lalthangfsla and Lalranghtka.

When the police party was approaching the village, it was ambushed.

Senior police officers, including Inspector General of Police K Lalchhunga and Deputy Inspector General of Police Deepak Mishra, have rushed to the spot.
