Naga underground leaders resurface

Three top leaders of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (I-M) faction are reportedly in Nagaland now to take stock of the ground situation after the ceasefire with the Centre, official sources preferring anonymity said in Kohima today.

The leaders -- NSCN (I-M) chairman Isak Chishi Swu, vice-chairman Khodao Yanthan and general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah -- have arrived in Nagaland, sources said.

This is their first visit to the state after declaration of ceasefire with the Government of India. The leaders will also visit some other places in the state and meet political leaders, NGOs and church leaders to apprise themselves of the situation and to assess the state of the dialogue on the Naga issue.

The sources said that one or two leaders may visit the neighbouring state of Manipur too where the NSCN (I-M) have their bases.

The visit of the top leaders is significant in light of the recent truce between the NSCN (I-M) and the NSCN (K) to stop fratricidal killings as a step towards the unification of all underground factions for a negotiated settlement of the Naga issue.
