Sonia withdraws her resignationAfter a week of protests and demonstrations, Sonia Gandhi tonight withdrew her resignation as Congress president, putting an end to the unprecedented confusion and frustration in the country's oldest political party. Gandhi will preside over the special session of the All-India Congress Committee scheduled to be held tomorrow. Her nod came after the Congress Working Committee held a meeting and adopted a resolution reiterating its request to withdraw her resignation, continue as party president and preside over tomorrow's session. Briefing reporters, AICC general secretary Pranab Mukherjee said his colleague Oscar Fernandes took the resolution to Gandhi, who finally agreed to accept it. Asked whether the AICC session would become infructuous as it was convened to request Gandhi to withdraw her resignation, Mukherjee said the session would have the regular agenda dominated by the party president's address. He said her message would be important as it would be the first one after the withdrawal of her resignation. UNI |
