India rules out bilateral dialogue with Pakistan

Expressing serious concern over imposition of military rule in Pakistan, India today ruled out resumption of bilateral dialogue with Islamabad until internal situation became clear.

A spokesman of the Ministry of External Affairs said that India was concerned about the direction in which the situation was heading in Pakistan.

Indian high commissioner to Pakistan G Parthasarthy was called to the Pakistan foreign office yesterday where he was briefed about the developments.

The spokesman said: ''We continue to monitor and keep a close watch on these developments.''

Pakistan is effectively under martial law following a military coup on Tuesday in which Nawaz Sharif's democratically elected government was dismissed.

Asked whether imposition of emergency in Pakistan would result into postponement of President Bill Clinton's visit to India, the spokesman refused to comment.

However, he said, so far no date has been fixed for President Clinton's visit to India.
