E-Mail this report to a friend

Senior Indian Police Service officer Umesh Chandra, his gunman and his driver were shot dead by suspected Naxalites of the banned People's War Group in Hyderabad today.

Police said Chandra, assistant inspector general of police (welfare), was shot at by four masked gunmen riding two motorcycles who overtook his car.

Chandra's gunman and driver were killed on the spot. The attackers continued to fire at Chandra as he tried to escape, injuring him grievously.

The police officer was rushed to the NIMS Hospital, where he died.

Chandra (33) had earlier worked in Naxalite-infested Karimnagar district as superintendent of police and was also the police chief in violent, faction-ridden Cuddapah.
