Trinamul youth leader shot dead

Unknown assailants shot dead West Bengal Trinamul Yuva Congress North 24 Parganas district president Bikas Basu this morning near a dispensary on Ghoshpara road in Ichapur.

The 42-year-old district leader, who was also a school teacher, was shifted to Ichapur rifle factory hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, according to police.

Trinamool Congress supporters said the police resorted to lathicharge and firing to disperse the mob which agitated after the news of the leader's death spread. Police said some criminals shot at him from close range when he was sitting near the dispensary. Senior police officials rushed to the hospital. Basu is survived by his wife. Tension prevailed in the area.
