Quake, intensity 4.5, hits Kolhapur city

A major earthquake with an intensity of 4.5 on the Richter Scale was experienced in the wee hours of today, rousing the population of the Karad, Chiplun, Kolhapur and surrounding regions in Maharashtra from their slumber.

According to sources, the earthquake, with the epicentre 12 km from Koyna dam, was followed by three after-shocks. The first rattle was experienced at 0400:21 hrs with a magnitude of 4.5, while the following three measured 2.2, 2.5 and 2.1 on the Richter Scale at 0417 hrs, 0421 hrs and 0426 hrs respectively.

The intensity of the earthquake was so high that the people were forced out of their houses, as cracks developed to the structures at many places. No casualties have been reported so far.

This quake is the second one in a month's time in Maharashtra. An earthquake had occurred on March 12 this year at 2346 hrs with 4.6 intensity on the Richter Scale, which also had Koyna dam as its epicentre and was felt more or less throughout the state, including Bombay city.
