We won't give in to terrorism, says PM

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee asserted in the Lok Sabha on Friday that India would never yield to terrorism even though it is determined to continue the talks with the extremist Hizbul Mujahideen to find a peaceful solution to the Kashmir problem.

Making a brief statement in the House, Vajpayee pointed out that investigations by the chief of the unified command of the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir had found that foreign terrorists linked with Pakistan's Lashkar-e-Tayiba were responsible for the massacre of more than 100 people in the state on Tuesday.

Vajpayee asked militant groups to come forward for talks for redressal of their grievances. "Other groups which have chosen the path of violence should also realise that the people of J&K want peace in the state. It is futile for them to continue on the path of violence. They should come forward for talks with the government for redressal of their grievances," he said.

He was sure, Vajpayee said, that the House was one with him in assuring the people of J&K and the nation that "we will not yield to terrorism."

"I may add that while the fight against terrorism will continue, India will not give up efforts for restoration of peace in J&K," the prime minister said.

He thanked Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for having accompanied him to Kashmir on Thursday to study the situation there in the light of the massacres.
