Curfew imposed in Shillong: PTI

E-Mail this report to a friend

Curfew has been imposed in Meghalaya's state capital for 24 hours since 05:00 hours IST on Wednesday following an exchange of fire between police and suspected Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council militants, official sources said in Shillong.

Suspected HNLC militants traded fire with policemen at Motphran point, the business hub of the state capital late on Tuesday night, during a 36-hour state-wide bandh called by two militant organisations, East Khasi hills district magistrate L Roy said.

A policeman was killed and another was injured when the fleeing terrorists fired at the forces in pursuit.

Roy said Central Reserve Police Force personnel joined the Meghalaya police in chasing the militants, who intermittently fired at the security forces at seven places in the city.

Senior police officials cordoned off the area and search operations are on.

The 36-hour Meghalaya bandh, called by the Achik National Volunteers Council (ANVC) and HNLC ended at 06:00 hours IST on Wednesday.

Normal life was disrupted in the state in the wake of the bandh call to boycott Independence Day celebrations.
