Bus hijacked in Bombay, offender nabbed

E-Mail this report to a friend

After planes, trains, taxis and cars, it was the turn of a Bombay Electric Supply and Transport undertaking bus to be hijacked by a commuter.

The drama began at 0800 IST on Saturday morning when the bus, plying between the Ghatkopar bus depot and Hutatma Chowk [Flora Fountain] in south Bombay, reached its destination. Both the driver and the conductor went about their chores. The driver got down to check the air pressure in the tyres while the conductor proceeded to submit the fare list at the timekeeper's office when a commuter, Rajesh Singh alias Neta Singh (30), jumped into the driver's seat and drove away.

Startled, the driver and conductor chased the bus in a taxi and intercepted it near the Jehangir Art Gallery at Rampart Row. Singh was nabbed and taken to the Azad Maidan police station where he was arrested. He was awarded six months' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500. The police also took the bus into custody.

When asked the reason behind his conduct, Singh said he was on his way to Ghatkopar and all of a sudden felt like driving the bus to his destination.

Without further thought, he jumped into the driver's seat and drove away. He followed his instinct and committed the offence, he confessed to the police.
