AP Congress adamant on tariff issue

The fast-unto-death by Congress and leftist legislators entered the sixth day on Wednesday, as leader of the opposition Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy said that there was no question of talks with the government unless Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu conceded the demand for a rollback of a steep power tariff hike.

At a joint press conference at the hunger strike camp, Congress and leftist leaders indicated the hardening of stance on talks with the government to end the stand-off on the tariff issue. They insisted that the invitation for talks should come from Naidu and there was no need for mediation by others, including the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The hunger strike camp was shifted inside the MLA quarters building following rain.

Fourteen fasting legislators have been hospitalised following deterioration in their condition. They included N Rajyalakshmi, wife of former chief minister N Janardhana Reddy.

Doctors are keeping a close watch on the fasting members, particularly those suffering from hypertension, cardiac problems, ulcers and diabetes.

The condition of those admitted to the Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is stated to be stable.

A city police spokesman said that the situation was peaceful on Wednesday, though Congress and leftist activists organised road blockades at some places.
