Maharashtra assembly speaker refuses to accept legal notice

Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Arun Gujarati has refused to accept a legal notice sent to him by the lawyer of the 13 suspended Shiv Sena legislators who have moved the Bombay high court, challenging his July 25 ruling in the lower house.

Gujarati had suspended the legislators for periods ranging between six months and a year after they indulged in a free-for-all, damaging property of the House following the arrest of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on July 25.

Gujarati, in a statement in Bombay on Wednesday, said he had done so to protect the rights of state legislatures as permitted by the Constitution.

He also denied the allegation of the petitioners' lawyer that while refusing to accept the notice he had made derogatory remarks about the judiciary.
