Army, IAF assisting relief operations in AP

Army and Indian Air Force personnel were assisting in relief and rescue operations in six flood-affected districts of Andhra Pradesh, where the toll in rain-related incidents has mounted to 162 even as the water level in the Godavari river receded all along its course on Thursday.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu informed the legislative assembly that 285 villages, spread over Khammam, Karimnagar, Warangal, Nizamabad, West Godavari and East Godavari districts, were worst affected by the floods.

Making a statement in the House, he said 17,657 persons from low-lying areas have been shifted to 115 relief camps and about 200 launches, boats and other vehicles were engaged for relief operations.

Water level of the Godavari at the temple town of Bhadrachalam, which touched 48.80 feet on Thursday morning against the danger level of 53 feet, was receding steadily and was expected to reach 45 feet later in the day, Naidu said.

The water level at Dowleshwaram in East Godavari district touched 17.80 feet, against the third warning level of 17.75 feet, and was likely to recede further, he said.

The total death toll has mounted to 162 with Guntur accounting for 34 deaths followed by Hyderabad 21, Cuddapah 15, Kurnool 13, Medak and Nalgonda 11 each, Ranga Reddy 9, Krishna 8, Khammam 9, Prakasam and Warangal seven each, Nellore and Adilabad 6 each, Karimnagar 4 and West Godavari one.
