Five policemen injured in army attack

E-Mail this report to a friend

Five policemen, including two assistant sub-inspectors, were beaten up by armymen who barged into Kotowali police station in Coochbehar town in West Bengal, Superintendent of Police K C Meena said on Thursday.

Trouble started when an army captain riding a two wheeler was stopped by a police officer and asked to show his identity card on Wednesday.

A scuffle broke out between the two, Meena said.

The captain returned to the barracks and returned to the police station with 30 army jawans. They started beating up the policemen on duty.

An assistant sub-inspector was seriously injured and admitted to a nursing home, Meena said.

Police lodged a case against the captain and the 30 jawans. The army has also lodged a counter First Information Report, Meena said.

Army authorities, however, maintained that the captain had been beaten up by the police, which enraged the jawans.
