Mamata quits over Punjab rail mishap

A correspondent in New Delhi

Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee tendered her resignation to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at 07.30 hours IST on Monday, accepting 'moral responsibility' for the railway accident in Punjab. Forty-six people were killed in the Howrah-Amritsar mishap on Saturday.

Banerjee, who had visited the mishap site on Saturday night, said she would try her best to ensure that railway safety was not compromised with.

The 1999 CAG report had revealed that only 15.62 per cent accidents in five years have been reported by the Railways to Parliament.

The resignation has not yet been accepted, but Vajpayee and Mamata are expected to meet on Monday evening to discuss the resignation.

Banerjee had earlier resigned over the hike in prices of petroleum products, but later withdrew the resignation.
