Loss of lives touched my heart: Mamata

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, who resigned on Monday morning owning 'moral responsibility' for the Howrah-Amritsar Mail accident, said the loss of lives had 'touched my heart' and left the decision on her resignation to the prime minister.

"I don't see the operational side of the Railways, only the administrative aspects. But as a human being, the accident has touched my heart," she said before leaving for Parliament House, where she was expected to make a statement.

"Even if one person dies (in a rail mishap), I feel guilty. Ours is the world's second largest rail network and there is need for more care and safety," Banerjee said.

"This is a crisis year for the Railways and the system has to be revamped. In my letter to Vajpayee, I have written that I tried my best to transform the affairs. I feel it was my moral duty to resign. I have left it to him (Vajpayee) to decide on the resignation," she said.

Banerjee said she had given information about the accident and the condition of the injured passengers to the prime minister after visiting the hospitals.

Meanwhile, senior official in the Prime Minister's Office Sudheendra Kulkarni, who played a mediatory role when Banerjee resigned a few months ago on the petrol price hike decision of the National Democratic Alliance government, met Mamata at her residence.

However, Kulkarni refused to speak to the media about the meeting.
