Sonia man is UP Congress chief

Sri Prakash Jaiswal was on Monday elected unopposed to the post of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president, following a truce arrived at with the dissidents at the intervention of Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

The UP Congress Election Authority chairman Chaudhary Virendra Singh said 130 Pradesh Congress Committee delegates proposed Jaiswal's name. "Since no nominations were filed against Jaiswal, he was declared elected unopposed," he said.

Sujan Singh Bundela, a loyalist of dissident leader Jitendra Prasada, had withdrawn from the race following a meeting between Gandhi and Prasada in Delhi, in which a decision was taken to maintain unity in the party's state unit.

Bundela was among those who proposed Jaiswal's name, apart from former Union minister N D Tewari, former UPCC president Salman Khurshid and Congress Legislature Party leader Pramod Tewari, Virendra Singh said.

To a question, Singh said the four-member Review Committee, looking into complaints of irregularities in party organisational elections, would meet next week to consider complaints.

"Those who have failed to find a place in the organisation may be adjusted if their complaints are found (to be) genuine," he said.

The Review Committee would submit its recommendations to the party's Central Election Authority chairman Ram Niwas Mirdha whose decision would be final, Singh said and added the PCC had authorisied Gandhi to constitute the state executive of the party.
