Postal services paralysed in Maharashtra,
Goa for second day

The General Post Office in south Bombay and other post offices in the metropolis were deserted.

However, Post Master General of Maharashtra and Goa Circle D S Balachandra said that all the head post offices were opened with the staff attendance being 3 per cent on an average and are doing minimum transactions like stamp sale.

"There will no money transaction during the strike period but we are trying to deliver few parcels within Bombay and to Pune and Nagpur through speed post where telephone numbers of the destination were available," he said.

Generally, the first and second weeks of the month are when most people in the city send money orders and demand drafts to their relatives in rural areas.

The indefinite strike by 59,000 out of the total 60,000 employees manning about 13080 post offices in the two states began on Tuesday morning along with their colleagues all over the country demanding among other things higher wages and other benefits recommended by Justice Talwar Committee.
