as postal strike continues

Describing the situation as having partially improved, Post Master General D S Balchandra said the number of home guards posted in Maharashtra circle had gone up to 476.

In Bombay, 77 home guards had been posted to ensure skeletal services in the city.

"We have managed to exchange 435 mail bags internally in Maharashtra circle on Saturday morning and 18 mail bags in Bombay. On Friday, we had managed to 2000 mail bags," he said.

The attendance in several post offices had gone up by .35 per cent, he said, adding, the inflow of mail had dwindled with people having practically stopped posting letters in view of the on-going strike.

"We had also tried to ensure skeletal functioning of speed post by calling up people to come and collect their mail but most of the people failed to turn up," he said.

The three federations - National Federation of Postal Employees, Federation of National Postal Organisations and Bhartiya Postal Employees Federation had called the strike demanding wage revision and implementation of Justice Talwar Committee's recommendations.
